The previously published CDC survey results were reported to be a cause for alarm. Thus, senators and different law governing bodies were indeed startled that they have seemed to act so impulsively against electronic cigarettes. Their eyes became blinded over the potential ecig benefits that can be experienced by the public consumers.
According to the CDC report, the number of high school and middle school, students who tried ecigarettes in 2011 at 4.7% increased to 10% in 2012. Apparently, at about the same time this report was published, there was also an article in the journal Lancet showing the results of a small study where it was found that ecigs are as effective as approved nicotine patches in smoke cessation.
Ecig Advocate Speaks
Professor Michael Siegel, a known proponent of electronic cigarettes is once again in defense of these relatively new devices. According to him, ecig benefits have been clouded by the negative vaping effects that were merely exaggerated. Of all those who like to quit smoking, only 6% succeeds and the industry of tobacco is ever free in marketing cigarettes to the consumers.
Siegel said that the alarming conclusion on the popularity of ecigs among teens is premature. There are no evidences showing that ecigarettes are being used as gateway to lasting addiction to nicotine and then to old-fashioned cigarettes.
Dr. Frieden, Siegel commented, failed to mention that these teens who were using ecigs are already smoking. Thus, seeing these minors experimenting on ecigs is not a cause for alarm. The study did not show examples of children who start to smoke right after trying ecigarettes first.
Nicotine, said Siegel, is not what makes tobacco smoking responsible for the health problems and deat rates. Electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco nor involve burning of tobacco. Thus, none of the thousand harmful chemicals are delivered by ecigs; clearly making them safer than the real thing.
He said that rather than embrace and support a potential savior of thousands of lives, anti-smoking groups attack them and discourage consumers from using them. These ecig opponents are so solidified in their ideology that they merely hate the products because using those looks like smoking. This causes them to lose sight of the usefulness of the device.
